A So. Cal. Winter Scarf Pattern
Here's a pattern - really easy - for a scarf that can be worn almost all year round. It's especially good for a southern California winter when you don't need a ton of warmth because - even though you're standing in the snow, the sun is shining and warm. The scarf is light and airy but provides just enough warmth and style for a nice winter day.
Pattern: So Cal Winter Scarf
Pattern Note: V-Stitch is (DC, ch 1, DC) all in the specified stitch
I ball bulky yarn. I used Sensations Angel Hair available at Joann's.
Size S crochet hook
Row 1: ch 13, sc in second chain from hook and in each ch across (12 sc)
Row 2: Turn, ch 4, dc in first sc (beg V-stitch) *skip 2 sc, V-stitch in next sc three times. Dc in last sc. ch 1 turn.
Row 3: sc in each dc and ch 1 space across.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until scarf is desired length. I found 1 ball of angel hair was the perfect length scarf.
You can reserve the end of the ball and use the remaining yarn to make fringe for each end of your scarf. Either way it looks great.
I used a partially used ball of angel hair to make a cowl, using the same pattern and just slip stitching the ends together to form a circular scarf.
This is more for looks than warmth, although it does keep the back of my neck warm. ;-)

Makes commenting on blogs a pain in the butt - but they are apparently necessary due to comments like the one above which has nothing to do with the content on this page and is obviously SPAM. ugh.

Love this scarf pattern. I have used Angel Hair yarn and it's a joy to work with .. and one of the softest yarns ever!
Easiest to reply anonymous- I have a web site and get hundreds of these! Hate it- love the scarf, though!
I love the Sensations Angel Hair Yarn. Its soft against your skin. Question: where did you find an S hook?
I like using the V-stitch because you can work up a scarf in no time.

This is a beautiful scarf. I'm a bit new to crochet and I am having a hard time with the third and 4th rows, how many stitches should there be in the 3rd row? Thank you.
I purchased my "S" hook at Joanne's - I think it's the largest hook they stock, if I'm not mistaken. They don't always have them on the shelves, sometimes they run out - I don't believe they stock very many of that size. It is nicknamed "the Speed Hook" for obvious reasons, lol.
Good luck finding it, if you have trouble finding one at Joanne's try going online to order it there.
Hi chylon,
thank you for your question, I hope that I can answer it in a way that will help you most.
Throughout the scarf, one row will consist of four sets of v-stitches with a dc at the very end
the next row will be sc in each dc and ch 1 sp.. there ought to be 12 sc across that row at all times. If you end up with less or more the edges of the scarf will be uneven.
When working with the angel hair yarn, due to the nature of the yarn, it's sometimes easy to miss a stitch so counting your stitches is a good idea.
Also, I found that when working with the huge "S" hook I was trying to work two stitches into the same place instead of the next stitch so it was easy for me to come out with too many stitches across.
The bulky yarn (angel hair) and the enormous S hook make crocheting a lot faster than working with worsted weight but it also slows one down a bit if you're not used to managing the larger hook. Once you get the hang of it, you'll be quick like a bunny!
how do you do a v stitches.
@ Anonymous: Sorry I didn't specify how to make a V-stitch in the beginning of this pattern, it was an oversight that I will fix right away. For this pattern a V-stitch is simply a (DC, ch 1, DC) all in the specified stitch. Other patterns may use a different type of V-stitch such as 2DC, ch2, 2DC in the specified stitch so it's important to check the pattern notes before beginning your project. Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention, and again I'm very sorry for not the stitch instructions at the beginning of the pattern. Take care
Cynthia
I wonder what this scarf would look like as an infinity scarf with a little fringe on the edges. My daughter saw one in a store that she liked but it was expensive.
Hi! Thank you for this yummy pattern...just found it in the All Free Crochet letter. I am a novice, but your explanation sounds like I can do it, so will tackle it after the holidays, most likely. Jan, Feb and ometimes evn Mar. can have some rather bleak, I-don'twant-to-leave-the-house-days, which are perfect for crochet, reading or painting.
Thanks again!
Can this be made with fine mohair and a large hook?
